For the first installment of The Coaching Corner, meet Abii. Abii is a Mindset & Mental Health Coach with a spiritual edge. I asked Abii to collaborate with me because I instantly fell in love with her content on Instagram. Her posts are super insightful and pretty well, unfiltered. Abii's communication style makes each and every word all the more relatable whilst her inspiring story really lets her authenticity shine through.
The theme of mental health is certainly a trending topic, especially right now as many of us are experiencing quarantine life in our own homes. I don't know about you but I do struggle with this lockdown on some days and a few friends of mine tend to find this an extremely difficult prospect to deal with. What's even more difficult is the fact that we don't know how long exactly this will last for! I asked Abii if she could advise those struggling with the lockdown with any tips and techniques:
What techniques and advice can you give to individuals who may be struggling with Mental Health e.g. anxiety during the current COVID-19 outbreak/lockdown?
"Just take one day at a time."
Abii: If you’re feeling overwhelmed and struggling to see the light at the end of the tunnel, just take one day at a time. You don’t need to worry about what’s going to happen next week, next month or in 6 months time. Just take each day as it comes.
I also love to recommend breathwork to my clients! It’s changed my life and helps me to release any intense emotions or anxiety that I’m feeling. Wim Hoff has great breathwork exercises as does Samantha Skelly at Pause Breathwork.
Why not try our Mindfulness Cards to relax your mind during the lockdown?
To become a coach, you need patience, dedication and above all - passion! This brings me to my next question, Abii:
How did you find your passion for Coaching and know that this was the career for you?
Abii: I have a long history of mental illness and in 2015 I started a blog called 'The Borderline Holistic' where I shared my journey to heal myself of mental illness.
I slowly gained an audience and started receiving lots of questions asking me how people could help themselves heal their mental health. This led me to train as a life coach so that I could help people manage and improve their mental health in a more impactful way.
"...the more I help others, the more I help myself heal."
I’ve always loved helping others and being able to combine my love of spirituality, personal development and other healing modalities to help people heal their mental health is a dream come true. Also, the more I help others, the more I help myself heal. So it’s a win-win situation!
How do you stay focused and motivated on your path towards happiness and success?
"I focus on the bigger picture."
Abii: I focus on the bigger picture. I have a clear vision of where I want to take my business and the person that I want to become and then I take inspired-action to get there. When I start to doubt myself or have a day where I ‘can’t be bothered’, I remind myself of my big picture vision and it motivates me to get off my ass and just do it!
I also have people in my life who I call ‘expanders’. They’re people I look up to who have the type of business, income, and impact that I envision for myself, like Kathrin Zenkina or James Wedmore. When I doubt myself I think “what would Kathrin Zenkina do?” and then I do it!
Focusing on the bigger picture is a very helpful tip to maintain motivation on your path to happiness and success. Naming your mentor-like figures as 'expanders' is genius and I can't believe I haven't heard of that term before. Of course, many of us have people in our lives that act as our mentors and inspirations - whether they are real-life friends, family members and work colleagues or simply the people you see on your TV.
Whoever it may be, I'm sure we can all think of a few people we'd love to part-emulate. Whether, as Abii says, that's the type of business, income, and impact a person possesses or whether it's other things like skillset and personality (just to name a few). Naming these figures as 'expanders' is ideal because they allow you to look beyond yourself and envision more of what is possible. What expanders do you have in your life? Perhaps the Success Oracles cards will be able to give you some ideas.
Finally, inspired by the show 'Inside the Actor’s Studio', Abii:
What is your favourite word?
Abii: Eudaimonia which can be translated as ‘human flourishing’, a contented state of being happy, healthy and prosperous.
What sound or noise do you love?
Abii: Torrential rain on my window!
What profession, other than your own, would you like to attempt?
Abii: I had planned to go to university to study forensic anthropology which is a method of identifying human remains! That or I wanted to be a mortician or funeral director. Yes, really!
Thank you so much for your contribution Abii, I'm sure our readers will find your insights very helpful (as have I!). Don't forget to check in next week for another contribution to our Coaching Corner.
