Meet Zainab. Zainab is a Transformational and Mindset Coach. As soon as I spoke to Zainab, I instantly fell in love with her enthusiasm and knew she'd be a great addition to The Coaching Corner. The first thing I noticed about Zainab? Her amazing style! She is incredibly stylish and has an amazing mindset to match. It makes sense that she'd consider being a fashion designer (see questions at the end of the post), she is clearly very talented in this area.
What techniques and advice can you give to individuals who may be struggling with anxiety during the current COVID-19 outbreak/lockdown?
Zainab: I would say this is the perfect time to learn how to organise and clean out your thoughts and beliefs that aren't serving you. I've suffered from anxiety for so many years. I still have my moments but I've learned that my thoughts create my anxiety. That might not be the case for everyone, but learning how to work with your thoughts will give you that confidence you need to handle any situation.
"Don't give meaning to your thoughts."
Don't give meaning to your thoughts. We have over 50 thousands thoughts a day. You are constantly on auto-pilot, your brain seeks out fear so that it can protect itself. Most likely you are experiencing negative thoughts, don't give meaning to them. Allow them to come and go, observe them. As soon as you give meaning to them, you make them become important and reality.
Breath work is an incredible way to cope when you're dealing with constant negative thoughts that are creating the anxiety. I take every morning to breathe for at least 5 minutes.
Limit your medium intake. Everyday we have a choice to what we consume. Do you want to consume a lot of negativity and dismay? You can choose to consume healthier content for the psyche so that it doesn't add to your anxiety.
Tip 3 is so important, especially with the current affairs today. I think we often don't realise how much negative content we lend our psyche too, especially through the likes of your Instagram and Twitter feed for example. Try and experiment now and have a look through your most used social media app and scroll through the feed for just a minute or so. Then, take a mental or physical note of how many posts could be considered negative versus those that are positive. Once this is established, you can get an idea of what type of information is entering you consciously or even subconsciously. You may decide to have a clear out of accounts that you're following just to limit this kind of content in your reach.
Being aware of what you give as well as intake is as equally as important. Journalling is a great way to add reflection into your daily routines. Browse our selection of Journals to get you started.
How did you find your passion for Coaching and know that this was the career for you?
"I didn't think I had what it took to be a coach..."
Zainab: I would say I always knew I wanted to be in a position where I could influence, inspire and motivate people. But, I was so scared of that dream. I was scared because I didn't think I had what it took to be a coach, especially at such a young age. All of my thoughts surrounding that were very toxic. I became clinically depressed and a drug addict because I thought it was better to suppress who I wanted to be, but didn't believe.
It wasn't until I hired a mentor/coach, she was able to help me actualise my dream. She planted the seed in my head. When I started to get better, I started to water it. I just want to share my story to other women. I want them to know what is possible!
How do you stay focused and motivated on your path towards happiness and success?
"I have a coach/mentor who keeps me VERY accountable."
I have a coach/mentor who keeps me VERY accountable. I can't imagine not having one, I think having a coach is the greatest luxury. They help with your blind spots, they are able to give you solid advice.
Vision board!!! I believe having a vision board is sooooo important. Everyday, I wake up and go to bed having my goals in the forefront of my mind. So when I am feeling doubt or frustration, my goals that I have envisioned help me to stay motivated. It reminds me of my why!
Family and friends. I have the greatest support and I am so thankful to all of my family and friends who continue to support me.
Finally, inspired by the show 'Inside the Actor’s Studio', Zainab:
What is your favourite word?
What sound or noise do you love?
Zainab: I love binaural beats. Binaural beats in the alpha frequencies (8 to 13 Hz) are thought to encourage relaxation, promote positivity, and decrease anxiety.
Binaural beats in the lower beta frequencies (14 to 30 Hz) have been linked to increased concentration and alertness, problem-solving, and improved memory.
What profession, other than your own, would you like to attempt?
Zainab: Inspirational/motivational speaker or high-end fashion stylist.
Thank you so much for your contribution Zainab, I'm sure our readers will find your insights very helpful (as have I!). Don't forget to check in next week for another contribution to our Coaching Corner.
